Although I unfortunately didn’t have enough opportunity to work with her, I still have the image of a brilliant and remarkable researcher, whose humility and kindness command respect – Emilie
Karina is one of the most concerned, involved, and fun persons I have ever known. I still cannot fathom that we have lost her. Even more reason to follow on her path of using string science for making lasting change in the workplace – Gudela
There are so many things I will remember about Karina — her competence, of course, her leadership, her team spirit, her kindness and energy. I could write about any of these. But I don’t want to remember her with sadness. Instead, I want to remember her through her humor — because she was truly funny, with a distinct and delightful sense of humor that stayed with you.
Karina was trained in the experimental tradition of psychology — a fact that was clearly reflected in much of her work — and she deeply believed in experimental science. At the same time, she was fully aware of how challenging it is to obtain truly valid experimental data. So, in that spirit, here’s a joke she once told me:
One morning, a participant in a double-blind experiment says to the research assistant: “You’ve switched my medication to a different one today, haven’t you?”
The assistant replies: “How would you know? This is a double-blind study — even I don’t know. I just hand you a white pill every morning.”
And the participant answers: “Yes, but the previous pill floated when I spat it into the toilet. This one sinks!”
That was Karina — scientific, sharp, and always ready to laugh at the absurdities of our field, even as she gave it her all – Dragos
What stood out for me was Karina’s joyful (and sometimes perhaps slightly mischievous 😉) laugh. I will remember her genuine appreciation for good food, her eye for beautiful shoes, and her endless passion for travel. Most of all, I valued her remarkable ability to quickly form meaningful connections with people. Her warmth and kindness touched me, and I will truly miss her presence – Barbara
Karina was a very engaged work and organizational psychologist whose scientific contributions will influence scholars for many years to come. We all appreciated her positive attitude and enthusiasm. It was fun to have her as our president, and to plan meetings and meals with her. She is greatly missed by her friends and colleagues – Anonymous
Dear Karina. Your sudden death is difficult to understand – even though I knew you were ill. How can a person that is so alive and who enjoyed living so much, suddenly not be among us anymore? You have always been so active, energetic, prolific and brilliant. And added such a large proportion of joyful madness and absurdity to every conversation. You were my outrageously extravagant and extraordinary intelligent scientific friend – and I’m sure others will feel exactly the same. Science will become pale and dull, now that you’re gone – Hans
When I joined ENOP some years back, Karina contacted me a few months before the meeting (she was a great planner) suggesting the hotel where to stay. She also booked a dinner (30 minutes brisk walking distance) in a Michelin restaurant. It was a nice way to make me comfortable and less nervous about meeting all the famous people in ENOP. This was not unique for me, Karina used to make all the new members feel welcome at ENOP, which showed how caring and considerate she was towards her colleagues. It was fun to be in Karina’s company, her laughter could be heard from afar. She was generous with her time and expertise and always willing to cooperate. Karina loved the good things in life, including traveling, gourmet meals and elegant clothes.
Karina is greatly missed, but her legacy will live on through her great impact in Work and Organisational Psychology – Tuija
It was with deep sadness I received the news of the passing of Professor Karina Nielsen, a dear friend, a distinguished scholar, mentor, and leader in the field of work and organizational psychology.
Karina Nielsen was internationally renowned for her groundbreaking research in organizational interventions, workplace health, and employee well-being. Her contributions have left a lasting impact on academia and practice, inspiring countless students, colleagues, and professionals worldwide.
I want to inform about an upcoming handbook for practitioners; Sustainable Interventions in Organizations adding to the Karina’s important legacy which is to be published by Oxford University Press. The book is written by Karina Nielsen, Glorian Sorensen, Nadia El-Salanti and Michael Munch-Hansen. Drawing on Karina’s extensive research and demonstrated through a research case and a practitioner case, the handbook includes numerous tools and visualizations designed to support interventions in organizations, aimed at enhancing workers’ health and well-being through participatory processes.
I will miss her deeply, but cherish all the wonderful memories. I will continue reading, presenting and citing her work contributing to improving worker health and well-being- Marit
Dear Karina. I will miss not only your fantastic research contributions, but also your energy, your company during ENOP meetings and other conferences, and your laughter. – Magnus
